12 min read · Regulated by ACCA (UK) · Open after Class 12, any stream

ACCA is a UK-based, globally recognised accounting qualification — one of the very few professional accounting credentials you can start straight after Class 12, and one that can dramatically shorten if you already hold a B.Com, CA or CMA. With 247,000+ members across 180+ countries, it's built for students who want an accounting career with genuine international mobility.

Overview

What is ACCA?

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is a UK-based professional accounting body offering one of the world's most widely held accounting qualifications, with recognition in over 180 countries. It covers accounting, audit, taxation, financial management and business strategy, with a strong emphasis on ethics and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

What makes ACCA distinct from CA, CS or CMA is its flexibility: three of its papers are on-demand computer-based exams you can sit almost any time, its exemption system can excuse you from up to 9 of its 13 papers if you already hold a relevant qualification, and it's genuinely portable — the same designation is recognised the same way in Mumbai, Dubai, London or Singapore.

Who should choose ACCA — and who should think twice

ACCA is a good fit if you...

  • Want an accounting qualification you can start right after Class 12, with genuine global portability.
  • Already hold a B.Com, CA or CMA and want to add an international credential quickly through exemptions.
  • Want flexibility to pace exams around a job or degree, rather than a fixed cohort schedule.

Think twice if you...

  • Specifically want Indian statutory audit signing rights — that currently belongs to ICAI-qualified CAs only.
  • Are uncomfortable with fees billed in GBP, which move with the exchange rate on each payment.
  • Want the single strongest domestic brand recognition in India — CA still edges out ACCA for many traditional Indian employers.
Eligibility

Who can register, and when to start

After Class 12 (standard entry)

  • Open to any stream, subject to meeting ACCA's minimum Class 12 marks requirement (commonly cited as around 65% in two subjects including Maths/Accounts and English, and 50% in the remaining subjects) — always confirm the exact current threshold on accaglobal.com.
  • Students who don't meet standard entry can start via the Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) route instead and progress into ACCA later.

After graduation (with exemptions)

  • B.Com, BAF, CA, CMA or CPA holders can register and claim exemptions on relevant papers, cutting total papers remaining.
  • A qualified ICAI CA can enter directly at Strategic Professional level, needing only 4 remaining papers.
Step-by-step

  4. EPSM

Ethics & Professional Skills Module, ~20 hours online.

Applied Knowledge (3 papers)BT — Business and Technology · MA — Management Accounting · FA — Financial Accounting
Applied Skills (6 papers)LW — Corporate and Business Law · PM — Performance Management · TX — Taxation · FR — Financial Reporting · AA — Audit and Assurance · FM — Financial Management
Strategic Professional — Essentials (2 compulsory)SBL — Strategic Business Leader · SBR — Strategic Business Reporting
Strategic Professional — Options (choose any 2)AFM — Advanced Financial Management · APM — Advanced Performance Management · ATX — Advanced Taxation · AAA — Advanced Audit and Assurance

You must complete each level fully before moving to the next, but within a level you can attempt papers in any order. Applied Knowledge papers are available on-demand year-round; Applied Skills and Strategic Professional papers are session-based (March, June, September, December), with a maximum of 4 exams per window and 8 per calendar year.

ACCA's biggest advantage over CA/CS/CMA

Exemptions — skip papers you've already covered

Exemptions apply only to Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills (9 papers total) — never to Strategic Professional, which every candidate must sit regardless of background.

Your prior qualificationTypical exemptionsPapers remaining
B.Com (Pass), standard universityUp to 3 (BT, MA, FA)10
CA Foundation clearedAround 4 (Applied Knowledge)9
CA Intermediate (both groups)Around 58
Qualified CA (ICAI member)Maximum 9 (all AK + AS)4 (SBL, SBR + 2 options)
Qualified CMA (ICMAI member)Up to 9, depending on paper mappingAs low as 4

Exemptions aren't automatic — you apply through ACCA's online exemption calculator with your transcripts, and you still pay an exemption fee per paper (roughly £86 for Applied Knowledge, £111–114 for Applied Skills) rather than the full exam fee. Even with maximum exemptions, sitting a couple of the "skippable" papers instead is a legitimate strategy some candidates use to build exam technique before the harder Strategic Professional papers.

Passing criteria

Unlike ICAI/ICSI/ICMAI's group-and-aggregate system, ACCA papers are assessed individually — each paper has its own standard pass mark, generally 50%, with no aggregation across multiple papers and no concept of "groups." You either pass a given paper or you don't, and you re-sit only that specific paper if you fail — you never lose credit for papers you've already passed.

This paper-by-paper system is one reason many students find ACCA less stressful to plan around than CA or CMA's group-based structure — a single weak paper doesn't drag down an otherwise strong group.
Beyond the exams

Ethics module & Practical Experience Requirement (PER)

Passing all 13 papers makes you an ACCA affiliate — not yet a full member. To become a full member, you also need:

  • The Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) — a mandatory ~20-hour online module, required before you can attempt Strategic Professional exams.
  • The Practical Experience Requirement (PER) — 36 months of relevant work experience, with specific performance objectives signed off by a workplace mentor. This can be completed before, during, or after your exams.
Common mistake: assuming "ACCA qualified" means the same as "ACCA member." An affiliate who hasn't completed PER is meaningfully behind a full member on salary and recognition — start lining up relevant work experience early rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Paid in GBP

ACCA fees (2026 cycle)

ItemApprox. cost (GBP)
Initial registration (one-time, often discounted)£30 (standard £89)
Annual subscription (per year)£140
Applied Knowledge exam (per paper, on-demand)~£84–110
Applied Skills exam (per paper, standard entry)~£147–151
Strategic Professional exam (per paper)~£191–268
Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM)£83
Exemption fee (if claiming instead of sitting)£86 (Applied Knowledge) / £111–114 (Applied Skills)

At an illustrative rate of ~₹128/GBP, a student sitting all 13 papers with no exemptions typically spends roughly ₹2–3.5 lakh on official ACCA fees alone (registration + 3 years' subscription + all exams + EPSM), rising to ₹3.5–4.5 lakh with professional coaching. A qualified CA claiming maximum exemptions can bring the official-fees total down to roughly ₹85,000–95,000, since only 4 Strategic Professional papers remain. Difficulty & approximate pass rates

Difficulty increases sharply as you climb levels. Applied Knowledge pass rates typically run 64–88% (Business and Technology is usually the highest), Applied Skills is more variable, and Strategic Professional pass rates typically run 38–53% — comparable in difficulty to the harder papers in CA or CMA. Most working professionals complete the full qualification, papers alone, in roughly 2.5–4 years; strong full-time students with exemptions can finish faster.

Indicative figures

ACCA salary in India

Actual pay depends heavily on whether you're an affiliate or full member, your employer, and your city — these are broad, commonly reported ranges, not guarantees.

Fresher₹4–8 LPA

Big 4 and GCC roles (HSBC, JPMorgan, Barclays) sit at the higher end.

Mid-career (3–5 yrs)₹15–25 LPA

Advisory, IFRS-focused and analytics-heavy roles grow fastest.

Senior / Leadership₹30–50 LPA+

Finance Manager, Controller and CFO-track roles at MNCs and listed companies.

Full ACCA members typically earn 15–25% more than affiliates who haven't yet completed PER, at the same experience level — worth factoring into how quickly you prioritise your practical experience.

Future scope & the impact of AI

Routine bookkeeping, reconciliations and basic reporting are increasingly automated across the GCC and shared-services roles ACCA members often start in — this is already reshaping entry-level work. But ACCA's emphasis on IFRS interpretation, audit judgment, tax strategy and ethical decision-making remains difficult to automate, and demand for ACCA-qualified professionals in India's rapidly growing GCC sector has been rising, not falling, as multinationals expand finance operations here.

ACCA members who add data analytics, IFRS specialisation or advisory skills to their core qualification tend to be best positioned as automation reshapes the more routine end of the profession.

Honest take

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Genuinely global recognition across 180+ countries, unmatched by India-only qualifications.
  • Flexible on-demand and multi-window scheduling makes it easier to pace around a job or degree.
  • The strongest exemption system of any major professional course — a real shortcut for CA/CMA holders.

Disadvantages

  • No Indian statutory audit signing rights on its own — CA still holds that ground domestically.
  • Fees in GBP mean your INR cost is somewhat unpredictable and can rise with a weaker rupee.
  • Slightly lower starting salaries than CA at the fresher stage in traditional Indian firms, though this often converges by year 5.

Common myths

Myths vs facts

Myth: ACCA lets you sign statutory audits in India, just like CA.

Fact: Indian statutory audit signing rights are currently reserved for ICAI-qualified CAs — ACCA is valued for advisory, reporting, tax and finance roles instead.

Myth: Passing all 13 papers makes you a full ACCA member.

Fact: Passing all papers makes you an "affiliate." Full membership also requires the Ethics module and 36 months of the Practical Experience Requirement (PER).

Myth: ACCA is always cheaper than CA.

Fact: Without exemptions, ACCA's total official fees (₹2–4.5 lakh) generally run higher than CA's (₹80,000–1,00,000) — the affordability advantage mainly shows up for CA/CMA holders claiming maximum exemptions.

Practical advice

Expert tips for ACCA students

  • Check your exemptions before paying for any exam — the ACCA exemptions calculator on accaglobal.com takes minutes and can save months of study and real money.
  • Start your PER search early — 36 months of relevant experience is the single biggest bottleneck to full membership, more than the exams themselves.
  • Register and pay your annual subscription on time — lapsing costs a re-registration fee on top of what you already owe.
  • Treat Financial Reporting (FR) and Performance Management (PM) at Applied Skills as foundational — they directly underpin the harder Strategic Professional papers.
Good to know

Frequently asked questions

No. A qualified ICAI Chartered Accountant typically gets the maximum 9 exemptions, covering all 3 Applied Knowledge and all 6 Applied Skills papers. The 4 Strategic Professional papers (SBL, SBR and two optional papers) cannot be exempted for anyone, regardless of prior qualification.
Not on their own. Signing statutory audit reports under Indian company law is currently reserved for ICAI-qualified Chartered Accountants. ACCA is a globally recognised qualification valued for advisory, reporting, taxation and finance roles in India, but it does not by itself grant Indian statutory audit signing rights.
ACCA is often considered more flexible than CA because of its on-demand Applied Knowledge exams, exemption system, and multiple exam windows per year, which let candidates pace themselves. It isn't necessarily "easier" — Strategic Professional papers have pass rates similar to CA's harder papers — but the structure gives more control over timing.
Yes. Beyond passing all exams and completing the Ethics and Professional Skills Module, you need to complete the Practical Experience Requirement (PER) — 36 months of relevant work experience with performance objectives signed off by a workplace mentor — before you can become a full ACCA member rather than just an affiliate.
Yes, ACCA's standard entry route is open to students from any stream, subject to meeting ACCA's minimum Class 12 marks requirement. Students who don't meet the standard entry criteria can start through the Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) route instead.
